May is glorious in Rome and the perfect time to checkout some inspiration fashion design. In addition to the pleasant weather, there are countless special events to to take advantage of throughout the month. The first weekend of the month, cultural and historic buildings throughout the city, including many Embassies and private homes, are open to the public during the annual Roma Open House. Later in the month, Notte dei Musei (Museum Night) will take place on the weekend of May 16. Museums and archaeological sites will be open with shows and exhibitions from 8 pm to 2 am for a symbolic one euro ticket.
Many of the popular Roma Open House events require pre-registration and fill up quickly while other institutions are open on a first come first serve basis. Without high expectations, my friends and I made plans to head to the Accademia di Costume e Moda. It did not require advance pre-registration and is located on Via della Rondinella near Castel San Angelo and Piazza Navona.
The Accademia di Costume e Moda is a fashion school in Rome that focuses on costume and high-end fashion design. The open house turned out to be quite interactive and worthwhile for anyone interested in fashion or other creative arts. We wound up spending a few hours and were able to watch the students at work – designing with traditional media as well as innovative new material. The best part was observing some purse making techniques.
Most fashion institutions in Italy are based in Milan and Florence, but Rome makes a great locations as well. Several major fashion and jewelry houses were founded (some still maintain headquarters) in the Eternal City. The design students have opportunities to collaborate with big brands like Fendi, Prada, and Valentino.

I think we may have convinced the institute to offer a one day purse making course for amateurs like us.
Students also presented their portfolio. My favorite was an accessory line inspired by macaroons. So pretty!
